The National City Firefighters have a long and proud history. The Fire Department itself is the second oldest Fire Department in the county, having been established in 1887. Throughout our history and still today, we have a reputation as being tough, well trained and highly professional in our service to the citizens of National City.
The National City Fire Department runs well over 6000 calls a year, consistently ranking us among the busiest per capita in the county. Two (4-person) paramedic assessment engines, one (4 person) truck and a 24 hr Battalion Chief are assigned daily to protect and serve the 60,000 residents and 100,000 daily population of National City. The city itself is 9.5 square miles and is bordered by Chula Vista and San Diego City. AMR Paramedic ambulances are also housed at our stations.
Our Fire Chief for the past 4 years is Roderick Juniel. Chief Juniel was previously the Fire Chief for the City of Denver. Chief Juniel brings a highly positive and personal attitude to the Department and the union. He truly cares about each and every one of us. We enjoy an excellent relationship with Chief Juniel as Professional Firefighters and union members. The only "tense" time is when the Chargers play the Broncos!
The local is also very fortunate to have a positive, progressive and open relationship with the Mayor, City Council and City Manager. We all share the same goal: Provide the citizens of National City with the highest and most professional level of public safety!
Our Firefighters union was formed in 1979. We have always been and continue to be highly visible and dedicated to the needs of the community. The NCFFA is also involved in many community organizations and charities. The following is a list of just a few:
Spirit of the Holidays
Lions Club
Kiwanis
Chamber of Commerce
Little League
N.C. Boys and Girls Club
N.C. Senior Center
MDA
Special Olympics
We are a strong union and we take our affiliations very seriously.
We are the National City Firefighters Local 2744!
